[Newt startles a bit when he finds the other at his doorstep.

The Brit looked far from alright. He looked tired and disheveled. Well, he never said he was doing good. He said he was getting on by and that's exactly what.] W-Why are you at my doorstep? [It's asked with genuine surprise. perhaps there's a bit of defensiveness just barely noticeable in his tone.]

[One of Jean-Paul's brows arches delicately.]

I told you, I was worried. Chrisse, you look awful. Here, let me carry your shit.

I told you I was fine.

[Which is far less convincing in person when you don't look alright.

He chews at his bottom lip and keeps his eyes downcast. His grip tightens on the paper bag a smidge.] I can carry it on my own. You didn't have to come all the way out here just to check on me. [He's acutely aware that getting here took very little time for the other though.]

Newt,the last I heard of you, your brother said you were missing. Of course I wanted to check on you.

Come on, I swear this isn't a ploy to get into your house.

[He can't even really be mad at Theseus for publicly asking for his whereabouts.

He sighs after a moment.] I'm sorry, but I can't help but be at a loss. I just fail to understand why you're so concerned when the last time we spoke to each other, you had been very blunt that you considered me to be a waste of your time. [He shuffles from foot to foot nervously.]

[Jean-Paul raises both eyebrows this time.] Don't be ridiculous, Newt. I didn't even turn you down, exactly, but things are a touch complicated and that warrants conversation

[Newt stares at the other blankly for a moment before he furrows his brows. Turn him down?]

Ridiculous? You berated and insulted me before telling me I was a waste of time? I haven't a blood clue what you're talking about with this turning me down business.

You were hitting on me.

...oh, Chrisse. The doppelgangers.

[Newt opens his mouth but closes it again without saying anything. Decidedly, he really doesn't want to continue this conversation on his doorstep.]

Come on. Let's go inside. [At least they can sit and talk versus having this publicly on display. He moves to get his front door unlocked and let the other inside.] I'd like to try and get on the same page.

What exactly did I say to you? [Or his doppelganger. Or whatever.]

[Jean-Paul nods as he passes into Newt's house.]

You said some blue bug or somet'ing reminded you of my eyes.

[He shuts the door behind him and moves to deposit the bags of supplies on the table. He automatically moves to get a pot on the stove. Just basic hospitality. It would be rude of him not to offer drinks to guests.] You can sit where you like.

[The place is in a little more disarray than usual. Papers stacked on the table and Newt's bed unmade that sits in the corner.

He pauses a bit before-] Billywig. Yes, well. They weren't wrong, I suppose.

Merci. [He sits at the table, looking around curiously.] I asked if you were hitting on me and you said yes, in an endearingly awkward way. It was quite a surprise.

I take it my double was somehow an even bigger asshole than I am.

[All the paper scattered about is either notes about Deerington and what looks to be old notes about miscellaneous magical creatures. They're not separated as per Newt's leaning towards chaos.]

I- [He clears his throat.] I can't really say I'm the type who's forward enough to hit on another. [He's not going to talk specifically about hitting on Jean-Paul. He thinks about the risque story written about them and immediately tries to think of something else.]

I really should have known it wasn't you. I'm sorry. [He doesn't want to repeat what had been said. Perhaps he's being sensitive about it, but it wasn't a good feeling to be told those things by someone pretending to be someone he considered close.]

Non, you're not, which is why it caught me by surprise. Even your doppelganger has no game.

[He watches Newt closely. He really does look awful.] Don't apologise. Half the town was fooled by these bastards.

Newt. I don't know what he said, but I don't think you're a waste of my time.

I feel like I should be terribly insulted by that statement.

[Not that it seems to bother him much either way. He does fuss with his Fluid before holding it out to the other to see.] I should have known better. It just got under my skin. What was said.

I imagine if you actually thought that, you wouldn't be here in the first place.

[Jean-Paul reads the messages and his expression changes from one of chilly interest to one of rage.]

Tabarnak. Newt. [He gently touches the other's wrist.] I do not think that. I do not make friends easily or often, and I value you very much.

[Newt just tucks the device back into his pocket and laughs a little nervously. He goes to busying himself with making tea. Does Jean-Paul even drink tea? Oops.]

I understand. I was a bit snippy with you though, wasn't I?

[He flinches a little before going still when the other touches him.] I'm glad. Really. It was really disheartening. You're important to me.

[He lets go to wave his hand dismissively.] You weren't that snippy, considering the circumstances.

Now tell me where you've been..

[Newt places a mug in front of the other before warming his hands with his own.]

I was indisposed. [Which is really a vague way of saying he was dead.]

[He studies Newt again with disturbing intensity.]

Oh, Newt. Did it happen again?

[His mouth quirks in a sad smile as he stares into the contents of his mug.[

I couldn't- I couldn't let someone else die in my place.

[Jean-Paul stands and walks around the table to hug him at an awkward angle.]

[He can't help the soft laugh when the other hugs him. Newt leans into it though; appreciating the warmth and comfort from the other.]

It's not as bad as the first time. I was a little more prepared for the repercussions. [The loss of memories is jarring, but he's making do.]

I've heard the symptoms are worse the more times it happens. [He gives him a squeeze before he lets go.]

You can tell me about it, if you like. But I understand if you'd rather not.

So. Your brother is really your brother? Not some fake?
