I'm not sure if I'm using this correctly...Is this recording? Oh- Yes! Hello! I mean, I'm quite sorry that I can't get to you right this moment. Do leave a message and I will try to get back to you in a timely manner. Thank you.

[Newt looks up as he taps his chin in thought.] Yes. Mine wasn't even a week ago, actually. It was on the 24th. [Which meant it had passed. He hadn't thought about it at all, not having a reason to celebrate it alone. It had completely slipped his mind.]
no subject
A quiet laugh that turns into a brief, startled choke as Newt says that his birthday was on the 24th. Just a few days ago and it was already over, and Hiccup never knew. He shifts to lean his hip against the counter and tugs Newt to face him, immediately reaching for his hand, eyebrows lifted. Logically he knows that his partner just doesn't really think about these things, but- emotionally, he's maybe a twinge upset.] It was on the 24th and you didn't tell me? We could have gone out and celebrated!
no subject
Newt is a little surprised. The change of position and just the feeling of upset from the other.] I- [Theseus also got a bit irate when he brushed his own birthday off. Perhaps it wasn't something significant to himself, but others thought differently.
After all, he would like to celebrate Hiccup's birthday now knowing that it was his birthday. It makes sense that it would be the same for Hiccup to want to celebrate his birthday.] I'm sorry. I had forgotten all about it in all honesty. [He had never really acclimated back into civilization even after being back in London for months. Too used to everyday being just another day spending a year out with only animals for company. Sure, he had correspondence in the form of letters, but celebrating was a different matter.]
We could- We can still celebrate now.
no subject
He can't stop himself from laughing a little when Newt says he forgot, because honestly- yeah, that sounds like him. He doesn't seem to have much of a head for holidays and things like that. And at least it's only 4-5 days out; he hasn't completely missed the opportunity to celebrate his partner's birthday.
Leaning his forehead against Newt's, he smiles with fond exasperation.] You forgot your own birthday. What am I going to do with you? [He gives his hand a light squeeze.] Thank Thor mine is so close or I never would have found out yours.
We- yes! Let's do something for both of our birthdays. Together. [Despite the momentary upset, he seems pleased at the idea.] Just the two of us. [To make it clear that he doesn't want to go all out or do a party or anything. He just wants it to be them sharing something special and unique to them as a pair.] Do you- Do you want to go out, or I could pick up food and we can stay in? It doesn't matter to me as long as I get to spend time with you.
no subject
Like his birthday.]
I-It isn't like I'm going to go out of my way to celebrate it alone. Unless you think I put party hats on my creatures and expect them to sit still long enough to do so. [Newt pulls his hand out of Hiccup's grasp. He isn't actually upset, but he surely looks like a sulking child more than anything.
Something that is hard to maintain when Hiccup is so sweet on him.] I don't really wish to go out. [He finds that wait staff will question them for small talk and the idea of revealing the festivities would give them unwarranted attention.] That is- It's your birthday. If you rather go out- [He'll gladly go out for Hiccup though.]
no subject
[He smiles a little wider, not surprised at the answer. It's fine by him, honestly. This is... something for them to share. Something private.] Nope. Today is our birthday. Staying home sounds lovely. [This is probably the first time he's said 'home' out loud and referred to the Phoenix Tear, rather than the rebuilt house near the forge.]
I can pick us up some dinner, though. You shouldn't have to cook today. [Unless he really wants to, in which case Hiccup will insist on helping, more than he usually does.] And then we can just stay in and enjoy each other.
no subject
There will be other days to go out. [And he likes the idea of just being with the other.]
You know I don't mind cooking. Though, I can't say I had anything in particular on the mind for tonight either. [He feels like he'd want to make something nice and he imagines that spending all day cooking seemed like a silly way to enjoy their time together.]
no subject
I know you don't mind, and you know I love your cooking. [It's still pretty novel for him, honestly. His fiancee and his mother are both awful cooks. Whatever Newt makes, he's more than happy to eat.] But neither of us should- should have to worry about it today.
[His expression softens a little, and he cups the side of Newt's face gently, thumbing over the skin of his jaw.] We can do whatever you'd like tonight. I'm- I'm all yours.
no subject
Perhaps he's also going in not thinking that they'll go their separate ways by then.]
I know you do. You have quite the appetite, you know. [He isn't sure how the other packs away the amount of food he does even.]
I would like to do something that we both decide we'd like to do. Today is your birthday after all. It shouldn't be just what I want to do. [It would be just like these two to want to do what the other wants to do and not consider what they want to do themselves simultaneously.]
no subject
He has the decency to look sheepish at that comment.] I just like what you make! It's- it's a compliment. [Vikings will eat nearly anything. If your food goes uneaten at the viking potluck, you're a terrible cook.]
What if what I want is to do what you want? [His smile turns playful, and he leans in to steal a brief kiss.] It's our birthday. But alright, we'll do something we both want. Not like that will be hard. [They like a lot of the same things; they have their differences, but also many similarities. It's probably why they work so well together, why they clicked so soon into their friendship.] How about we decide after I bring back some dinner? And- do your people have any birthday traditions?
no subject
It's flattering, really. [Impressive, but it's hard not to be somewhat flattered that Hiccup will practically inhale everything you cook.] I'll have to make something nice in the coming days as a belated gift. [Cook some of Hiccup's favorite dishes.]
We'll get nowhere if we keep going back and forth with the idea of doing what the other wants and not offering an actual activity. [And Newt offers a shy kiss back.] Other than gifts and spending time with others or having a party, nothing in particular stands out. I guess people try to make birthdays a personal experience, but there are nothing specific that sticks out otherwise.
no subject
Only if you want to. I don't need any gifts - I already got the best gift of all. [Hiccup presses their foreheads together lightly, smiling warm and fond. He's also going to be sappy as hell sometimes. Deal with it.
A laugh, and Newt can probably feel the way he immediately brightens as Newt kisses him back. He gets that he isn't as used to physical contact, so when it's offered, initiated, by his partner, he takes it in like a flower turning to the sun, heart fluttering with it.] Well, a party is out, and I think we can mutually agree not to do gifts this year. We'll just stay home and spend time together, then. [He'd be lying if he didn't have a few ideas of what he might like to do but... they're a little embarrassing, and also he isn't sure if Newt is ready for that yet. The night will develop as it develops, he figures.]
Anything's going to be special to me as long as you're here.
no subject
And of course, he only manages to become even redder. Hiccup certainly knows how to make a man weak in the knees.]
I don't need gifts, no. You've given me plenty as is. [He finds that if Hiccup even gets a whiff of what Newt might want and get it for him without a second thought. It's harder with them being bonded while they're window shopping. Hiccup only needs to feel the slight elation while Newt's gaze lingers for even a second too long.
It's almost hilarious given how oblivious both of them were to each other when they could catch even the smallest details otherwise.] Spending time together. I'd- Yes, I'd like that. I just hope it isn't too boring for you, given today is your birthday and it doesn't truly happen every year.
no subject
Only because you won't get things for yourself. [He says with a brief shrug, not sorry at all for that. Newt won't spend money on anything he views as frivolous for his own sake, even something like a new winter coat to keep warm. That's why he makes window shopping more like actual shopping; he has the money to do so, and it feels right. (Even if Hiccup is a bit the same himself, it's usually just because he makes the things he needs rather than buying them. Habit.)]
You're never boring. You know how much I like when it's just us. [How can he not? The feelings of contentment or joy or amusement aren't so subtle he can hide them from the Bond even if he tried. He has to have felt how Hiccup goes warm every time Newt smiles. He steals a brief kiss.] Wait here. I'll go pick up dinner and be right back.
[He gets food for takeaway from a little Monster-run restaurant they both like. The cook even smiles when he mentions it's their birthday, and puts a little honey-cake the right size for two in the bag that she refuses to let him pay for. Dinner is comfortable and companionable, and after, they find themselves on the couch, the setting sun drawing long shadows outside, animals all cared for and settled for the evening.
Hiccup inches his arm around Newt's shoulders, leaning a little closer to him, giving off the warmth of a fire-witch and breathing out quietly,] This is nice.
no subject
Nevermind that the whole point of being frivolous is to have things that weren't necessary but nice.
What was quite nice though was this. He didn't care much for celebrating his birthday, but he found this to be enjoyable. Curled up against Hiccup after a good meal. For as introverted as Newt can be, he could certainly ramble. He talks about all the small details about the creatures from filing down Greg's claws to what he found in Harry's burrow. He pauses though and smiles a little.] Yes. Quite. I find this to be my ideal way of celebrating. [Something relaxing and peaceful without having unnecessary interactions.]
no subject
He shifts just a little closer on the couch, his arm curling around Newt, his smile warm and constant.] Mine too. [He hopes they can celebrate a few more things like this. Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, he doesn't care what.
Voice a little softer, he says,] Happy birthday, Newt. [Before he leans in for a kiss, lingering and soft.]
no subject
I should be saying happy birthday to you. [He kisses back; clumsy and gentle.] Happy birthday, Hiccup.
Is there anything else you wanted? [Hiccup didn't seem material in anyway, but if he could offer more to the other, he certainly will. He wanted Hiccup to feel special on his birthday after all.]
no subject
And then he asks that question, while Hiccup is in the middle of shifting, practically straddling Newt's thigh to get closer for another long, slow kiss, and he flushes immediately, the tips of his ears turning red.]
Well, I- I don't know if you'd be comfortable... [There is something, something he has definitely thought about in the last couple of weeks, sharing his partner's bed, but he doesn't want to rush it if Newt isn't ready.]
no subject
Hiccup will either realize soon or already know that Newt's ability to read the room at times is rather...bad.]
What do you mean by that? Why wouldn't I be comfortable with something you'd want? [Really can't read the room.]
no subject
He settles a hand gently on the side of his face, thumbing over his cheek.] Lately, I've thought about- about what it would be like if we... [Odin's ghost, why is this so hard? Hiccup bites his lip and tries something else instead, open through the Bond and making obvious the heat, the want he's feeling, low in the pit of his stomach.] If we... got more physical. But I also don't, don't want you to feel pressured into anything, so, we can keep taking it slow if you'd rather-
no subject
He feels his face growing hot for a multitude of reasons. The conversation itself to the other being attracted to him enough to want to in the first place.
It isn't that he hadn't thought about it from time to time. It's been a stray thought here and there. Just that-] I- Oh. [How eloquent of him.]
It- I mean, it isn't that I'm not interested...
[He lets out a nervous little laugh.] Just that it would be my first time, you know...
no subject
Hearing that he is in fact interested causes an excited little surge through Hiccup, an understandable reaction to mutual desire, but he softens, leaning in to share breaths, his hand gentle on the side of Newt's face.]
It'll be my first time with- with a man, too. [He says, tips of his ears red but wanting to be reassuring.] I know- how things are supposed to work, generally speaking, but- it's still new. [Growing up in a viking village, even before he'd had sex he knew the general gist of it. Many Berkians are loud drunks and it's impossible not to overhear some things. Still, he understands being nervous, because he is too.]
no subject
It's a little embarrassing thinking on it now, but he's always been terribly honest and this wasn't exactly something he should hide or lie about.
He gently places his hands on Hiccup's chest and pushes the other back. Just enough so that they can look at each other proper. Seriously.] You aren't quite getting it, Hiccup. I-
[He averts his eyes for a moment before locking eyes with the other again.] It'll be my first time...in every sense of the word. [It's, perhaps, hilariously sad how little experience Newt has with this at all.] I've never been intimate with anyone.
no subject
Oh. Oh, you- Oh. [Eloquent. Something in him is surprised, sure, but also- fond, and a little awed, because...]
And you- you would want that... with me? [It seems more important now, to be clear about everything, to know for sure. He never expected that Newt had never been intimate with anyone. The gap in their experience is reversed from how one might assume, with their age difference. His eyes are wide and he's practically holding his breath now. If he says no, that's okay, he'll get over it, but-]
no subject
I don't see why not...? [It's normal. To want to do such things with someone else, right? And for his lack of experiences doesn't mean he hasn't been sexually attracted to someone else or anything.] I would think that perhaps you would be less willing, knowing so. [And he wouldn't blame the other if they would prefer someone who was more experienced.] I don't think it would be right for me not to be honest about my experiences. Or, well, lack of them.
